Best Edition Complete Guide to Bird Dog Training with Free EASY Reading!

There are some good nuggets of information in this book, but you need to sift through to find what is timeless. A large chunk of the first half of the book is useless because it's out of date - how to choose a breeder, housebreaking, etc. The author also uses some pretty flowery language that can be hard to follow (example: when comparing pointing breeds, instead of just saying the dog is bred to point and retrieve, he gives a different poetic description of the process for each breed that's a paragraph long).The summary of breeds for comparison at the beginning is helpful, although I wish more breeds were covered. (However, some of that info is also out of date - he goes on and on about how Brittanys are a spaniel but are different than all other spaniels, but the AKC stopped considering them a part of the spaniel family before this book was written... which makes a large portion of his write-up on the breed irrelevant.) The equipment described for training hasn't changed a whole lot and the described training methods would probably be just fine as long as they are done consistently, but I encourage anyone new to bird dog training to read several books on the subject because this book alone will NOT cut it.I'm sure this book was just fine when it was written in the 1980s, but because of its age I have a hard time recommending it when there are others that are much more current. There just isn't anything in it that you can't get from another more relevant book.(I'm no expert by any means, but I had my dogs professionally trained and familiarized myself with the methods used; I also have read several books now to prepare for training my next generation of hunting dogs myself. So with that in mind, take my review for what you feel it's worth.)
