Julie Anne Long writes the most fascinating books in this series, set in Pennyroyal Green. "What I did for the Duke," is as typically well written as all the others. The characters come alive, and the reader has the pleasure of the scattered vignettes, highlighting for the moment, characters met in previous books. This is done so cleverly that if you start the series in the middle, (as I did!) it does not confuse, or disturb the flow if the tale.The tale itself is splendidly romantic, with wistful twists and unexpected turns, along the way. The main protagonists are mature, even though a fair age gap separates them. The development of their romance progresses along unusual, and sometimes surprising lines. BUT it develops slowly with a growing knowledge of each other. And greater insights into their own feelings.Best of all is the clever, witty dialogue that flows throughout. How wonderfully refreshing to have intelligent characters! Which means an intelligent creator! Which brings me, unhappily, to the only complaint I have: WHY is this brilliant writer, having her duke and duchess occasionally addressed as, My Lord, or Lady Genevieve? Very disturbing! BUT everything else about this book was simply splendid.
