Towards the end of the nineteenth century and for the first few years of the twentieth, a strange invasion took place in Britain. The citadel of power, privilege and breeding in which the titled, land-owning governing class had barricaded itself for so long was breached. The incomers were a group of young women who, fifty years earlier, would have been looked on as the alien denizens of another world - the New World, to be precise. From 1874 - the year that Jennie Jerome, the first known 'Dollar Princess', married Randolph Churchill - to 1905, dozens of young American heiresses married into the British peerage, bringing with them all the fabulous wealth, glamour and sophistication of the Gilded Age.Anne de Courcy sets the stories of these young women and their families in the context of their times. Based on extensive first-hand research, drawing on diaries, memoirs and letters, this richly entertaining group biography reveals what they thought of their new lives in England - and what England thought of them.

At this time of writing, The Audiobook The Husband Hunters: Social Climbing in London and New York has garnered 9 customer reviews with rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Not a bad score at all as if you round it off, it’s actually a perfect TEN already. From the looks of that rating, we can say the Audiobook is Good TO READ!

In the second half of the 1800’s, especially from 1870 on, many women brought their wealthy heiress daughters overseas, especially to England in order for the daughters to exchange huge amounts of money as dowries for a title. The aristocracy in England, although titled and land-rich, were money poor. The women who brought their daughters to Europe, seeking titles for them, would get THEIR recompense in recognition by the elite of New York society, the 400 of Mrs. Astor. This well-researched and interesting book tells the stories of these mothers, daughters, the titled husbands and the end results! It tells, basically, the tale of the truth behind “Downton Abbey”. It’s often a very sad tale of real human lives because these daughters of the USA were well-educated, used to some independence, and saw their mothers as running households and running society, spending money their husbands made, while after the daughters were married to aristocracy, the daughters found out their husbands practically owned them and their fortunes. But their titles allowed their mothers to enter high society in America. Very few lived happy lives with their titles. Again, I though this book was researched well. I liked the photographs included. I would recommend this book.
