'One of the books of the year' DAN SNOW. 'This year's Christmas No.1' PETER FRANKOPAN. 'A masterclass in the history of Nazi Germany, with an internationally renowned expert as the teacher' GET HISTORY. On 30 January 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed the German Chancellor of a coalition government by President Hindenburg. Within a few months he had installed a dictatorship, jailing and killing his leftwing opponents, terrorising the rest of the population and driving Jews out of public life. He embarked on a crash programme on militaristic Keynesianism, reviving the economy and achieving full employment through massive public works, vast armaments spending and the cancellations of foreign debts. After the grim years of the Great Depression, Germany seemed to have been reborn as a brutal and determined European power. Over the course of the years from 1933 to 1939, Hitler won over most of the population to his vision of a renewed Reich. In these years of domestic triumph, cunning manoeuvres, pitting neighbouring powers against each other and biding his time, we see Hitler preparing for the moment that would realise his ambition. But what drove Hitler's success was also to be the fatal flaw of his regime: a relentless belief in war as the motor of greatness, a dream of vast conquests in Eastern Europe and an astonishingly fanatical racism. In The Hitler Years, Frank McDonough charts the rise and fall of the Third Reich under Hitler's hand. The first volume, Triumph, ends after Germany's comprehensive military defeat of Poland in 1939.

Dr. Frank McDonough (Ph.D from Lancaster University in the UK) is familiar to many viewers from his appearances on the History Channel. He is a learned expert on the Third Reich. In this his new book he covers each year in detail of the Nazi rule of Germany from 1933-1939. His second book The Hitler Years Disaster 1940-1945 will soon be published. This fine book is lavishly illustrated with many period photographs of this evil and dark period in the history of the twentieth century. I have studied World War II since a child and admit that many of these photos are new to me and I am sure will be for readers of the book. McDonough gives us a year by year account of the major events in each year from 1933-1939. Among the highlights:1. Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany in January 1933 befuddling the staid conservative element who thought they could control his actions. He became dictator by issuing the Emergency Enabling Act.2. Tough anti-Jewish laws took effect and persecution and terror followed. The Kristallnacht of 1938 and the opening of concentration camps were begun. The Reichstag Fire of 1934 was blamed on the Communists and helped the Nazi seize total control of Germany.3. Hitler's began to grab land in Europe by attacking Czechoslovakia and Poland. in 1938 and 1939. The German Army was vastly expanded despite Versailles Treaty restrictions which Hitler ignored.4. A good discussion of the Hitler-Eva Braun relationship.5. Hitler makes a fool of Neville Chamberlain the British Prime Minister at Munich. The United Kingdom and France proved ineffective in halting the growing power of Nazism.6. the book ends with the war against Poland and the beginning of European War in the autumn of 1939. If I were teaching a class on World War II in Europe this book could well serve as an introductory volume to the buildup for war.7. An excellent chapter discusses the 1936 Olympics in Berlin and the triumph at the game of four time medalist Jesse Owens who proved the foolishness of the German racial theory of black inferiority!8. A good discussion is given of the Hindenburg dirigible disaster.9. Adolf Hitler was one of the most evil men who have ever ruled a nation!10, This book can be used with profit as a handy way to refer to the basic facts of the Nazi era presented in a chronological orderly style. McDonough cuts through the Gordian Knot of boring prose and presents the tale of these somber and tragic years in an easy to understand way! I highly recommend this book by a leading English scholar of the horrific Third Reich years!
